Region parameters and commands

As in Logic’s Region inspector, a region can play differently from what it holds, without changing its notes. With one or more regions selected, the Inspector’s Region section shows:

Row MIDI regions Values
Quantize Moves each note’s start to the nearest grid point, counted from its bar line (note lengths stay). Follows tempo and signature changes. Off, 1/1 to 1/64 Note, and the triplets 1/3 (half-note triplets) to 1/96 Note
Q-Swing Moves every second grid point while quantizing: above 50 % later, below earlier (66 % is close to a triplet feel). 0–100 %, 50 % = straight
Transpose Semitones; notes stop at 0 and 127. -96 to +96
Velocity Added to every velocity; the result stays within 1–127. -99 to +127
Dynamics Compresses (3:1 … 1.25:1) or expands (0.8:1 … 0.33:1) velocities around 64, before the Velocity offset. Fixed plays every note at 64. Fixed, 3:1 … 1:1 … 0.33:1
Gate Time Scales note lengths. Fixed makes every note a 1/64 note; Legato lasts each note until the next one starts. Fixed, 10–200 %, Legato
Delay Plays the region earlier (negative) or later, in ticks (960 to a quarter note, following the tempo) or ms; the menu beside the value switches the unit and converts it. Audio regions have this row too. ±3840 ticks, ±2000 ms
  • Set a value with several regions selected and it goes to every one of them (MIDI rows to the MIDI regions). A row whose regions differ shows * (number fields show the first region’s value). Steps on one field in quick succession are one undo step.
  • The parameters apply wherever the region plays: playback, Bounce, Export, Bounce in Place, Freeze, Join and Export as MIDI File. Notes a negative delay or quantize moves before the region’s start still play.
  • The Tracks area draws a MIDI region’s notes as they play. The Piano Roll shows and edits the notes as they are stored.
  • Region menu › Apply Region Parameters writes the parameters into the regions and resets them, as one undo step: the notes move, change pitch, velocity and length; the region grows to keep notes a delay moved past its edges (a looped region keeps its length, its notes are kept inside it); an audio region moves by its delay. The region plays exactly as before.
  • Region menu › Color sets a region colour (Track Color resets it). Region menu › Rename… renames one region.
  • Mute regions with Ctrl+M (Control+M on macOS) or the region menu. Muted regions don’t play.
  • Cut, Copy, Paste (Ctrl+X, Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V): Paste places the copied regions at the playhead on the selected track, keeping their spacing and their relative tracks. Regions that don’t fit the track they would land on (audio on an instrument track) are skipped.
  • Duplicate (Ctrl+D): with regions selected (and the last click on a region), puts a copy straight after the selection; otherwise it duplicates the selected tracks.
  • Repeat (Edit › Repeat or the region menu): copies the selection 1 to 16 times straight after itself.
  • Right-click empty lane space › Paste Here pastes at that point.

From the region menu:

  • Move to New Track: moves the regions onto a new track with the same settings.
  • Set Locators by Regions (U): sets the cycle range to the selection.
  • MIDI: Quantize to 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32 notes; Transpose by an octave or a semitone; Export as MIDI File….
  • Bounce in Place… and Export as Audio File… (see Bounce and export).
  • Delete (Backspace or Delete).

Right-click empty lane space for Paste Here, Create MIDI Region (one bar, on instrument tracks), Import MIDI File Here… / Import Audio File Here…, Select All on Track, Select All and New Tracks….
