Markers and the Arrangement track

The marker lane at the bottom of the ruler is Logic’s Marker track.

  • Create Marker (Alt+’, or Navigate › Create Marker) adds a marker at the playhead, rounded to the nearest bar. Double-clicking empty marker lane creates one there.
  • Each marker is a bar in its colour with its name at the start. A marker lasts until the next one, or for a length of its own: right-click › Length (1 to 16 bars, or To Next Marker), type one in the Marker List, or drag the end of its bar (snapped; at least a beat). A marker with its own length has a stronger bar with a visible end.
  • Click a marker to select it and go to it; with Cycle on, the cycle takes the marker’s span too. Drag it to move it (snapped), or up into the cycle strip at the top of the ruler to set the locators by it. Double-click it to rename it. With a marker selected, Delete removes it.
  • Right-click a marker: Go to Marker, Set Locators to Marker (the cycle covers its section), Rename…, Length, Color, Delete, Marker List…. Right-click empty lane: Create Marker Here, Marker List….
  • Go to Previous / Next Marker: Alt+, and Alt+. (Navigate menu).
  • Navigate › Delete Marker removes the marker at or before the playhead.
  • Marker List (Ctrl+Alt+K, Navigate › Open Marker List): every marker with its colour, position, an editable name and length (bars beats divisions ticks; leave it empty to reach the next marker, which is shown dimmed), Go To and Delete, plus Create Marker. The selected marker is highlighted.
  • Markers are saved with the project, and every marker edit can be undone.

The top global track, as in Logic: show it with View › Show Global Tracks (G). Its sections mark out the song’s form and move it around.

  • Named sections — Intro, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Outro and so on — that follow each other without gaps. The + button in the header adds one after the last (eight bars, named Intro, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Outro in turn); double-click empty lane does the same, and right-click it › Add picks the name.
  • Click a section to select it and every region in it. Click its name for the name pop-up (Intro, Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, Bridge, Solo, Break, Interlude, Outro, Rename…), or double-click the section to type a name. Each name has its own colour; right-click › Color sets another.
  • Drag a section’s right edge to resize it (in bars). The later sections move along; the regions stay where they are.
  • Drag a section to another place in the order to move it with its content: the regions on every track in it (cut at the section’s edges), the automation and the markers go with it, and the sections it passes close up or make room. Hold Alt (Option) while dragging to insert a copy instead; everything after the copy moves later. The moved or copied section’s regions are selected afterwards.
  • Right-click a section: Name, Color, Select Regions in Section, Set Locators by Section, Go to Section, Delete Arrangement Marker (only the marker; the section before takes over its time) and Delete Arrangement Marker and Content (its regions, automation and markers go, and everything after it moves earlier to close the gap).
  • Each of these is one undo step. Tempo and signature changes stay where they are when sections move: rearrange sections with the same tempo, or fix the tempo track afterwards. A section move refuses to cut a frozen track’s regions; unfreeze the track first.
  • Sections, like markers, sit at fixed positions in time: changing the tempo doesn’t move them.
