Musical Typing
Musical Typing (View › Musical Typing, Ctrl+K, or the keyboard button in the control bar) plays the selected instrument track from the computer keyboard. Keys are mapped by their position, so it works on any keyboard layout:
| Keys | Plays |
|---|---|
| A S D F G H J K L ; ’ | White keys from C up (A = C) |
| W E T Y U O P | Black keys (W = C♯, E = D♯, T = F♯, Y = G♯, U = A♯, O = C♯, P = D♯) |
| Z / X | Octave down / up (starts at C3) |
| C / V | Velocity down / up by 10 (starts at 100) |
| Tab (hold) | Sustain pedal |
- The four-octave on-screen piano can be clicked or swept; clicking lower on a key plays louder. The Sustain button latches the pedal.
- While the window is open these keys play notes instead of running their usual commands. Combinations with Shift, Ctrl, Alt (and ⌘ on macOS) still work, so Shift+S still selects similar regions, and typing in text fields is not affected.
- Notes played this way are recorded like notes from a MIDI keyboard. The MIDI velocity curve doesn’t apply to them.
- With the Step Input Keyboard open, they are entered as steps too (see below).
