Event List
Logic’s Event List, for exact MIDI editing: every note and controller event of the selected MIDI regions as a line of numbers. Open it with D (View › List Editors, or the List Editors button at the right of the control bar), or with the Event List tab at the left of the Piano Roll’s bar (the Piano Roll tab goes back). It shares the Editors’ height, and the note selection is shared with the Piano Roll: notes selected in one are selected in the other.
- What it lists: the regions selected in the Tracks area (on the first one’s track), or every MIDI region of the selected software instrument track when none is selected.
- Columns: Position (bar, beat, division and tick, 240 ticks a division, following tempo and signature changes), Status (Note, Control, Pitch Bend, C-Press), Ch (always 1), Num (the note, as C3 = middle C, or the controller number; for pitch bend the low 7 bits), Val (velocity, or the value; for pitch bend the high 7 bits, so 0 64 is the centre) and Length/Info (a note’s length, counted from 0 as in Logic: “0 1 0 0” is one beat; a controller’s name; a pitch bend’s offset from the centre).
- Filter buttons under the bar show or hide Notes, Pitch Bend, Controller and Chnl Pressure events (also in the View menu).
- Selecting: click an event; Shift+click selects a range, Ctrl+click adds or removes one; Up and Down move through the list. With MIDI Out on, clicking a note plays it.
- Editing: drag any value up or down; a position or length changes by the part you drag (bars, beats, divisions or ticks), and every selected event of that type changes by the same amount. Or double-click a value and type it: a position as “5 2 1 1”, “5.2.1.1” or just “5” (missing parts are 1), a length as “0 1” (missing parts are 0), a note as “C3”, “F#2”, “Bb1” or a MIDI number. Enter applies, Esc cancels, and values are kept in range. A moved event takes its place in the list when you let go, and a moved note keeps its length in beats. Each edit is one undo step.
- Adding: the + button adds an event of the type shown beside it at the playhead (in the region there, or the nearest listed one; a one-bar region is made when the track has none nearby). It copies the selected event of that type, if there is one, as Logic’s Create does; otherwise a note is C3, velocity 100, a beat long, and a pitch bend is centred.
- Backspace deletes the selected events. The Edit › Select key commands (Shift+I Invert Selection, Shift+F All Following…) act on the listed events, as in the Piano Roll.
- The playhead: the event at the playhead is highlighted, and with Catch (the button and View menu) the list scrolls to keep it in view during playback.
- Separate window: the pop-out button at the right of the bar, the View menu, or View › Event List in Separate Window; it can then sit beside the Piano Roll on another screen.
Only the lines in view are drawn, so regions with thousands of events stay quick.
